Are you familiar with self-leveling gypsum?

Self-leveling floor screed gypsum is also known as gypsum-based self-leveling mortar.

未标题-1.jpg

It is a dry-mixed mortar specifically used for floor leveling, made by carefully blending gypsum, special aggregates, and various construction chemical additives in the factory.

未标题-2.jpg

It offers advantages such as high leveling accuracy, no cracking or hollowing, controllable thickness, high strength, dust-free operation, mechanized construction, high efficiency, shortened construction time, reduced costs, and increased floor height. It also offers excellent thermal and sound insulation properties and is environmentally friendly.

This issue will share the following:

1) What preparations are needed before gypsum self-leveling construction?

2) What is the construction process for gypsum self-leveling?

3) What precautions should be taken when applying gypsum self-leveling?

01

What preparations are needed before construction?

1. Materials

Surface finish, gypsum-based self-leveling mortar

2. Construction Tools

1) Mechanical Tools: Electric mixer, material drum, water bucket, floor scrubber, vacuum cleaner, electric cutter

2) Testing Tools: Level, flow tester

3) Auxiliary Tools: Water pipes, electrical wires and cables, primer roller, soft brush, water measuring cylinder, toothless scraper, special scraper (fine-tooth scraper), defoaming roller, spiked shoes, trowel, trowel, spatula, etc.

3. Personnel

Construction personnel should be based on the construction area and generally include: mechanics (for mixing self-leveling, floor sanding, vacuum cleaner, electric cutter, etc.), tilers (for repairing and leveling), laborers (for cleaning, handling, and applying surface finish), and management personnel (for site management, quality control, etc.).

02

How to Implement Construction Techniques?

1. Site Seclusion

The site should be sealed off, and cross-operation is strictly prohibited. During indoor construction, doors and windows should be closed and the site sealed off, as drafts can cause cracks in the self-leveling floor. No interruptions or pauses are permitted.

2. Substrate Inspection

Thoroughly inspect the substrate surface for defects such as sanding, hollows, flaking, peeling, looseness, roughness, grease, dust, and cracks. The surface should be dry and flat, meeting requirements.

3. Base Cleaning and Treatment

1) Use a detergent to remove grease, wax, and other contaminants from the base. Remove dust, loose concrete surfaces, grease, cement slurry, putty, and any impurities that may affect bond strength. Ensure the base is dense and free of loose particles and debris.

2) Vacuum any loose soil on the base.

3) Repair any honeycombs and holes in the base using a special repair mortar. Extensive hollows should be completely removed and reapplied.

未标题-7.jpg

4) The base must be strong and dense, with a compressive strength of no less than 20 MPa for concrete and 15 MPa for cement mortar. Otherwise, reinforcement or reapplying should be performed. For floors requiring waterproofing and moisture-proofing, a waterproof and moisture-proof layer should be pre-applied below the base.

IV. Elevation Control

Use a level to determine the elevation and thickness of the self-leveling mortar to be applied. Mark the elevation of the base with leveling screws.

5. Applying Primer

1) To prevent premature moisture loss in the self-leveling mortar, apply primer to seal the base layer, strengthen the bond between the base layer and the self-leveling mortar, prevent air bubbles, and improve the flowability of the self-leveling mortar.

未标题-8.jpg

2) Generally, the first coat of primer takes about 1-2 hours to dry, and the second coat takes about 3-4 hours.

3) Ensure the primer is completely dry and free of any buildup before proceeding to the next step.

6. Self-Leveling Mortar Application

1) Pre-dress the area to ensure continuous pouring of the entire area.

2) Accurately measure an appropriate amount of clean water using a measuring cylinder and place it in a clean mixing bucket. Start an electric mixer and slowly add the entire bag of self-leveling material. Stir continuously and evenly for 3-5 minutes. Form a fluid slurry with uniform consistency and no lumps.

未标题-9.jpg

3) Pour the mixed fluid self-leveling material onto the base surface within the working time and allow it to flow like water.

未标题-10.jpg

4) The cast strips of self-leveling material should reach the designed thickness. If the designed thickness is ≤10mm, a dedicated self-leveling scraper should be used for batching to assist leveling.

5) After spreading the slurry, use a toothed scraper to spread the slurry to the appropriate thickness. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes to allow trapped air bubbles to escape. Then, use a defoaming roller to deflate the slurry to facilitate flow and remove any bubbles, achieving a good joint.

6) Before the self-leveling material sets, wear spiked shoes and quickly roll the poured surface with a defoaming roller to remove any air introduced during mixing. This will help prevent air bubbles, rough surfaces, and height differences between strips.

7. Maintenance

1) After construction, self-leveling floors must be cured under construction conditions for at least 24 hours before use.

2) During the curing period, strong winds and drafts must be avoided, and temperatures must be kept below freezing.

8. Finished Product Protection

1) During the finished product protection period, garbage, debris, paint, and construction machinery must not be placed on the finished self-leveling floor to prevent contamination.

2) The surface of the self-leveling floor must not be struck or scratched with blunt or sharp objects, and walking on it is prohibited.

What precautions are needed?

1) Construction Environment Requirements: The dry ground temperature should not fall below +10°C, and the relative humidity should be maintained below 90%.

2) Self-leveling floors require a high level of foundation quality. Floor drains, trenches, and joints should be sealed with sponge strips.

3) Clean tap water is recommended for construction to avoid affecting the surface quality.

4) Before applying the second coat of primer and before applying the self-leveling floor, the primer surface must be dry to ensure optimal adhesion.

5) Self-leveling floors must be applied continuously without interruption, and ventilation should be maintained during construction.
